Google Releases Major AI Updates to Search Labs and SGE

Google recently announced new updates to Search Labs, most of them available to users who have opted-in for Google’s experiments. Here are some of the main updates to Search Labs which will be in effect for all Search Lab users soon and all Google users in the near future.

Notes on Search

Google has announced Notes on Search, allowing users to learn from “other people’s experiences” according to the Search Labs update newsletter.

Essentially, Notes on Search are reviews and further information about search results provided by Google users.

Like Google’s implementation of reviews in Google Maps, these notes allow people to share their thoughts about a webpage visible in Google search results. Some of these thoughts may be their opinions on a subject, further ideas, or other information they know to help other users. Currently, this is only available to a limited number of English and Hindi users in the US and India, and can only be used on mobile search results.

AI-powered Gift Ideas

In time for the holiday season, Google has announced AI-powered Gift Ideas available on Google Search. These will allow users to brainstorm gift ideas, including experiences.

Google Image Creator on Search

Google has announced its own image creator on search, for when a user cannot find an image they are looking for. A user searches for an image they would like to find, and Google’s SGE will create it for you. This seems to be in response to the rise of AI image generators, such as Microsoft’s Image Creator, DALL-E, and NightCafe.

SGE and Code Tips

SGE and Code Tips have merged. Now, you can get Code Tips with SGE rather than having Google decide whether or not a query is related to programming. This will make it far easier to generate code snippets with Google. However, more extensive code can already created on Google’s generative AI, Bard, and from Google’s competitors like ChatGPT. Additionally, many companies have already created their assistants that generate code and/or code snippets, such as Replit, GitHub, and Roblox.
