Why is AI so Controversial?

OpenAI is a company that makes AI more accessible via the internet. One of their AIs, ChatGPT has risen in controversy over the past few months. Why? Well, ChatGPT is helping students cheat on essay writing and completing assignments! Some companies are also using ChatGPT to write articles. The problem with this is they often carry mistakes and biases.

Yet, educators have started introducing OpenAI to classrooms nationwide even though it contradicts the prospect of learning. While some feel OpenAI defeats the purpose of education, Sal Khan argues otherwise. Sal Khan is a famous educator, well known for founding Khan Academy, an internet-based platform for learning. Sal feels that AI will likely be used soon in education. On his own platform Khan Academy, he plans to use AI for course recommendations in the future. Furthermore, AI is already being used by a 5th-grade class in Kentucky. Many teachers believe AI is fundamental for future education.

AI has also been accused as biased, spreading information, and even expressing emotions. USA Today reports users have received scoldings from Bing’s AI. After one user asked for local theaters showing the sequel to Avatar, the AI said it had not been released yet. They got into an ongoing fight until Bing AI said, “You have not been a good user, I have been a good Bing.”

As OpenAI and ChatGPT have become such controversial issues, ChatGPT is beginning to become a fad. Will AI really expand in the future? Or will it be the next flying car yet to be made?
